Freud’s great relevant work comes in an improved translation
Freud’s extensive work presents two large challenges to the translator. The first regards his style, where the teaching efforts, which impose extraordinary exposure clarity, and the high-quality literature, are conjugated and responsible for the reading that instigates readers’ intellectual curiosity, and provide them with his fluid and very harmonious phrases, which are doubtlessly an aesthetic pleasure.
The second regards the theoretical strictness to be followed, because a large number of concepts are built as the work advances and the translator must know them in order to maintain coherent nomenclature.
Englishman James Strachey – brother of writer Lytton, member of the Bloomsbury group, where Virginia Woolf excelled – did very well on the work with his Standard Edition. Although, upon striving to maintain conceptual strictness, he created expressions that step away a bit from the Freudian sense, such as the term “cathexis”, Strachey’s translation has the additional appeal of its opportune introductions, which situate each text, and an efficient cross-reference system, which facilitates the work of the studious very much.
Psychoanalyst Marilene Carone was one of the first persons to concern the need of directly translating the work of the Vienna-born wise man from German into Portuguese. She dedicated herself to a very large project, but due to her early death in 1987, it remained restricted to the texts “A Negação”, “Luto e Melancolia” and “Conferências Introdutórias à Psicanálise”.
The careful version of “Luto e Melancolia” made by Marilene Carone has been published previously in specialized magazines, and now publishing house Cosac Naify relaunches a well-presented edition, bound with a ribbon bookmark, and printed with different colors and fonts. The book is enriched with three texts. A small presentation by Modesto Carone, source of the information presented herein, and two articles by Maria Rita Kehl and Urania Tourinho Peres.
