Imagine a person chatting in Portuguese on the Internet and having the text translated in real-time into Chinese. This is possible thanks to ibabel, a tool developed by Sandro Rosa, from Sao Paulo. He is one of the startup creators – innovating ideas with market potential – who show their work at the Campus Party, an event dedicated to the digital world. The event continues until Sunday (12), at Anhembi, in Sao Paulo.
Self educated, Sandro has specialized in developing games and applications. “I learned by interacting and having fun”, he says. In 2006, the ibabel concept started from a work proposal in the United States. “I used some translators that I had to communicate, copying and pasting, but sometimes I got mixed up. I imagined if there wouldn’t be a more practical way to talk with a foreigner”, he remembers.
The entrepreneur gathered a group of friends and decided to make his dream come true. ibabel started to operate in November 2011 and allows communication in almost 40 languages, such as Arabic, Chinese and Hebrew.
Sandro noticed that the tool could become a social network. “I saw that people wanted more than only writing. They wished to share their experiences, talk about their lives and share common interests.” he says. Today, the network has around 10,000 members. Sandro’s next step is to make his invention available on the large social networks until February. With this, someone who follows a foreign personality can have the so-called timeline (group of information) translated.
